Welcome

Hello Everyone,

A big welcome to our new blog. A place where we will be reflecting on our 100 mile diet challenge in Kelowna and hopefully finding some new local food sources along the way.

Just a little back story if you have come upon this page organically. We are attending UBC's Okanagan campus in the wonderful Okanagan Valley. We have created this blog for our Geography of Food Systems' course to see how easy it is or isn't to find locally produces food within a 100 mile radius.  We are jumping in with both feet having done a minimal amount of pre-research for our one week of consuming locally. Our goal is see what we can find without having done extensive research, seeing how easy it is but also with an effort to see what we can do without, all while following the Canadian Food Guide requirements for basic nutrition. During and after our one week of consuming only within a 100 mile radius, we will seek out what we felt we were missing and also see what we have that we didn't know existed within our local area and gather this together as a sort of starting place for others that are making an effort to eat locally.

With all that said, if you know of any local food producers or growers for which we can access food within our 100 mile radius, please let us know! We are hoping to have a map up soon so we can get a clear picture of what communities fall into our area but until then the basic landmarks are Sicamous to the North, Nelson to the South East, Osoyoos (but actually we do go into the US) to the South, Princeton to the South West, Merritt to the West and Kamloops to the North West.

That's all for now. Please check in often as we reflect on our experiences and start creating a list of producers and growers in our area.

Until next time, eat well and local!
